MUSIC

Music is a vital part of our worship and helps us express the inexpressible through the God-given gift of song. Through congregational hymns, psalmody, instrumental music, and choral offerings, we raise our prayers and praise to our Creator. Please see our dropdown "Music" menu for more information on Christ Episcopal Church musical offerings such as choirs and our instruments.

James O'Donnell: Sunday, November 9, 2025 @ 4:00 pm

Internationally recognized as a conductor, organist and teacher, James O'Donnell has performed all over the world. Following a distinguished 23-year tenure as Organist and Master of the Choristers at Westminster Abbey, Mr. O'Donnell now holds the post of Professor in the Practice of Organ at Yale School of Music and the Yale Institute of Sacred Music in New Haven, CT, where he succeeds Thomas Murray as professor to graduate organ majors and other students in sacred music. In addition, he directs a newly formed professional liturgical vocal ensemble at Yale University, The Yale Consort, which will serve as a model and a vehicle for study for students preparing for careers in church music and liturgy.

David Baskeyfield: Sunday, March 1, 2026 @ 4:00 pm

Commended for his "masterful artistry" (The Diapason) and "stunning virtuosity and musicality" (Choir and Organ), David Baskeyfield has earned a reputation as a captivating performer, whose effortless technical facility is tempered by intelligent and mature interpretation, and informed above all by intuitive and communicative musicianship. His repertoire is wide and eclectic, at home with the music of the Old Masters of the 17th-century and the great 19th-century virtuosos. He is also one of relatively few organists in North America to improvise regularly in recital. Mr. Baskeyfield is currently Organist and Choirmaster at St. Paul's Episcopal Church, Greenville, NC.

Nathaniel Gumbs: Friday, May 17, 2026 @ 7:00 pm

Nathaniel Gumbs is a native of the Bronx, NY and has performed throughout the United States and abroad, including Antigua, St. Thomas, Ghana, Paris, and Munich, and is consistently gathering new fans and followers. The New York Times described Nathaniel's playing in their review of his recording with bass-baritone Dashon Burton, as "mature, lyrical, accurate and energetic," and that his performance was presented "deftly and with feeling." In 2017 The Diapason magazine recognized Nathaniel as one of 20 outstanding organists under 30 years old for his achievement in organ performance and church music. Mr. Gumbs currently serves at Director of Music at The Riverside Church in New York City.
